Ephemera Files

Take a peek inside my ephemera files (er....um...plastic drawers). As I find "special" pieces, that I think may work well on a Doll House or other assemblage, I file them in one of three drawers: anything anatomy related, cutesy stuff (paper dolls, etc), or the "other images" ephemera file. It's very sophisticated I know, but this system seems to work for me! All other scraps of paper floating in the studio are either tossed into the "to be cut up" box or the box of clippings ready for collage.

Collage in Progress

I was up late last night (or should I say early this morning) working on some new collage pieces. This is a snapshot I took before cleaning up. You can see a couple pieces from my Bricolage Series in the bottom left hand corner. I'll get them stitched up today and have them in the shop soon.

Box of Goodies

This box of goodies, from a quick thrift shop run on Friday, sat in the trunk of my car over the weekend. I lugged it into the studio last night to sort through everything. Many of the little things you see here will be making their way into the shop later on this week.

Happy Summer

We were out and about on Saturday and stopped to enjoy this scenic view overlooking the Konza Prairie. Everything looked so lush as a thundershower had just past over the area. Wishing you a happy summer--today marks the summer solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere!

Rainy Day Painting

We've had many rainy days this week so it's been hard to get outside and play. Lizzie has spent several hours in the garage painting. Our favorite painting this week is of a robot riding her house-on-a-wagon down the train tracks with the volcano erupting in the background. Oh yes, and a rainbow-haired girl with her dolly. I'm going to sign off a bit early this week and see you back here on Monday morning. Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful Dads out there! Wishing you a beautiful weekend.

Prosthetics Manual

This copiously illustrated (the publisher's description, not mine!) copy of A. A. Marks, Manual of Artificial Limbs has been added to my growing collection of old medical imagery. Tucked away inside the book was a copy of an old order form, printed with a convenient measuring tape, and return envelope. The numerous illustrations are striking in both execution and essence. I can't believe I found this one.

Work In Progress

The obsession with shredded paper continues to grow. I'm loving these jeweled tones and working within the constraints of gluing down one strip at a time--side by side--watching a pattern emerge. It's kind of therapeutic and I found myself falling into a meditative trance while working on this piece. Kind of like the time lapse video I watched recently of Buddhist monks creating a mandala. Hmmmmm. Anyhow, I really think this piece has a "Chinese restaurant" vibe going for it right now. We'll see where it ends up in a few days.

Beverage Blocks

I've been hoarding a collection of old beverage labels for some time and finally put them to good use in a large ephemera block set. Won't these add a fun pop of color to someone's kitchen? You can view more images of the set right here.

Doll House no 341 & 342

A pair of new doll houses, no 341 and 342, are available in the shop. Both of them feature insects from an 1878 entomology book.

Zoology Ephemera

Have you ever browsed through Inkpainter's shop on Etsy? It's a virtual treasure trove of old book plates and ephemera in many forms. There are currently over 3,000 items in his shop currently so be prepared to spend some time! I discovered these delicate Japanese zoology overlays there a few weeks ago. Still trying to decide whether to frame them or use in a collage.
