Piles of Things

You know how when nothing is coming together right it helps to take a step back...(breathe)...and then CLEAN, clean, clean? Somehow the act of dusting, scrubbing, purging, organizing and general straightening up of things is good for the mind and body. Well at least it's that way for me! My studio received a bit of this cleaning action over the weekend as did our stove which was long past due. Our house is by no means "company ready" but it's been enough to make things start coming together again (ie, now I can find that particular book which I know has the perfect image of a certain pair of feet for the collage I'm working on without going crazy and throwing the entire bookcase across the room). **whew** Ok. Now that I'm feeling like myself again, I did remember to take some snapshots of the piles of things that I cleaned up around the studio. Boy am I glad it's a new week.

Eat Your Heart Out no 2

Finished it up and here 'tis...Eat Your Heart Out no 2. Enjoy!

I Like Poketo

This notebook I ordered from Poketo came in the mail last week and I'm going to make myself do something fun in it this weekend. Not sure what, but it will most likely involve collage--just sayin'. I like the gridded pages, I like the red lines, I like Poketo's custom Tyvek mailer and love my Poketo sticker too. Thanks Poketo!

Picture Dominoes

I couldn't resist sharing these cheery, vivid graphics in the middle of winter. This winsome set of vintage picture dominoes by Spear's Games of England is available in the shop.

Work In Progress

Another version of my "eat your heart out" assemblage is coming together in the studio. It will be in the shop this weekend so "keep an eye out" for it!

Milestone 5,000

Woke up yesterday to a new milestone achieved--5,000 sales on Etsy! It's amazing to think that all of these 'art objects' have made their way to every state and numerous countries around the globe--literally every continent excepting of course the Antarctica. We went out to dinner to celebrate where Patrick and I toasted 'to the next 5,000' over the best margaritas The Little Apple has to offer. Thank you to each and every Sushipot patron who has been a part of growing our business--it means the world to us...literally!

Sketchbook: Chair

Chair.

It has been months since I've posted a page from my sketchbook and I have to admit I've been out of the habit. Anyhow, I picked it back up the other day and added to this page over the last few evenings. I always save the smallest bits and snippets from my collage work to use on my sketchbook pages.

Prickly Plaques

Three new prickly plaques were posted in the shop last night. I'm trying to put all of that heart imagery I gleaned to good use and even have another "Eat Your Heart Out" place setting coming together in the studio. Hope you had a good weekend too. Happy Monday!

Happy 40th Anniversary

My parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this weekend. I may get in trouble for this but I know my mom reads my blog and I stole these pictures of their wedding day in 1971 from her Facebook page (ha!). So before I sign off for the weekend I want to wish them a Happy 40th Anniversary and a safe voyage on their week-long celebratory get-away! Love you Mom & Dad.

Happy Friday all--I'll see you back here on Monday!

Eat Your Heart Out

Eat Your Heart Out

As promised earlier this week, a not-very-traditional Valentine themed Sushipot assemblage. Enjoy!

Doll House no 361

Doll House no 361 (with heart)

The first Doll House of the year folks! This heart was transplanted from an 1892 French volume on human anatomy and dissection.

Inanimate Objects

Inanimate Objects, 2009
mixed media on book page

I've unearthed a collage from the 'Sushipot archives' to share today. Just in case an explanation is needed...what you see here is a chair, a teakettle and a stubborn ass. You know what I'm talking about--we all have inanimate objects in our lives.

Harvesting Hearts

A view of my workspace last night. I've been receiving a few patient inquiries as to whether or not I'll be posting new Doll House's with anatomical hearts for the upcoming season of love. So, last night I "harvested" a few hearts and began laying out some new pieces. Stay tuned for these new assemblages--there will be more than just your run-of-the-mill Doll House coming to the shop in the next week.

Park Bench Family

Thanks to the new activity feed on Etsy I was able to snatch up these old figurines on impulse a few weeks ago from Gracie's Cottage. I've lovingly dubbed them the "park bench family" and they do make such a charming family unit, don't you think? They are made a some sort of composite material and the very sparse, chippy paint is one of their main attractions in my eyes. The first order of business will be to seal in the remaining bits as it continues to flake off at the slightest touch. I wouldn't be surprised if one or two of these make their way into an assemblage sometime soon but for now I'll let them hang out together on that "park bench."

Chocolate Cake

Someone who is remaining nameless in our household turned 30 yesterday (hint: it wasn't me and it wasn't Lizzie)! We showered this person with gifts including some spiffy new argyle socks and a Pogo Sketch for his iPad and took him out to dinner after which we came home celebrated with birthday cake. I must say that Lizzie's chocolate cake recipe is delicious!

New Collage Blocks

New collage art blocks were posted in the shop this weekend. A few of them are your not-so-traditional Valentine if your looking for something unique to give to your 'other' next month. Enjoy!

Interview On Etsy's Blog

A big thank you to Kristal of The Rikrak Studio for inviting me to be a part of her ongoing series " The Collectors". The interview was posted on her blog earlier this week and is now up on Etsy's blog. Also, a big thanks to Patrick for taking the above mugshot of me and my fancy bouquet of scissors. You can read the article about my obsession of collecting stuff right here. Happy Friday!

Homemade Picture Book

Rummaging through my studio this week I rediscovered this homemade cloth picture book purchased at Kelly's Vintage Goods on Etsy back in my pre-blogging days. I must tell you it has been so nice to have a group of like-minded others who enjoy my ramblings about the little things I find and buy and love. Anyhow, this picture book must have been made by some artsy-mama back in the day for their little boy at Christmas. I only scanned in a few of the pages (I may share more another day) but these were my favs as they are filled with cutouts of household objects 'n things. I love the faded images, the tattered edges and the perfectly random arrangement of the clippings. I'm thinking that little boy loved it too although (tsk, tsk) what the heck is that pack of Chesterfield's doing in a baby's picture book?

Bozo The Clown Puzzle

Another vintage changeable block puzzle, Bozo The Capital Clown, is available in the shop. He's a mighty fine clown of many different moods--according to the box there are 1,048,576 possible ways to arrange the blocks. You'll have to take The Gaston Manufacturing Company's word for it 'cuz believe me I didn't try!

Collecting Color

Several new instant collections were added to the vintage shop last night...brown, green, black, yellow, white and blue. What's your favorite color?

UPDATE: My collections were featured over at Kickcan and Conkers and an interview with The RikRak Studio today!

Snow On Things

We woke up this morning to snow on everything! It's our first snow of the season and of the year ('bout time!). Two years ago you couldn't have made me venture outside to take pictures on a snowy morning but now that I have a blog I shocked Patrick by my announcement. Do you remember Lizzie's orange birdhouse? It's such a pop of color out our window. Happy Monday all!

Toy Shovel Collection

Don't you think this collection of tin toy shovels would make for a darling wall display in a nursery or play room? The set is available in my vintage shop. Have a beautiful weekend!

To Do List Confession

Confession: I make a lot of "to do" lists and I have a peculiar habit. Many times I will write down a task that has already been completed just so I can have the satisfaction of physically crossing it off my list. I realize this is redundant and a waste of time but I can't shake the habit. It's like I have to see every single mundane task of my life stricken out. Do you ever do this? Have you ever done this? Please confess so I know I'm not alone.

Fuzzy Felt Fun

We were cleaning out our hall closet a few days ago and Lizzie re-discovered this box of Fuzzy Felt's that I picked up last year on one of my thrifting adventures. These kits of simple flannel board fun, which use colorful felt shapes to create images on a flocked board, were created by Lois Allan in 1950. Did a quick Etsy search to see if anyone is keeping this activity alive and am happy to report that they are! I also discovered that the original Fuzzy Felts are alive and well as a 60th anniversary edition is on the market in the United Kingdom.
