Do Your Thing

This inspiring video of a young entrepreneur named Caine was blogged by Jan over at Poppytalk last week. I thought I'd share it again here to make sure none of you miss out on this story of one child's creative determination and the encouragement he's received from his community for "doing his thing"--building his own arcade out of cardboard boxes. This kid is gonna go far doing his thing and I gotta say its an inspirational reminder to keep on creating and just Do Your Thing!

Tiny Drawings

Remember when I shared about how I could never toss any of Lizzie's artwork and it's starting to pile up? Well, everywhere I turn lately there are tiny little snippets of drawings. I'm thinkin' she's seen me snipping up collage bits and now it's influencing her artistic habits. Whenever her doll house needs a new item she 'draws' it for them. Well, these little bits are everywhere and we find our house need a good vacuum more often than not! Even though it's driving me a teeny bit crazy I'm lovin' it. Anyhow, I gathered a good sized pile of these tiny drawings and we made a little project of documenting them together. I considered titling each item but you can probably figure most of 'em out. My favorites are the shopping list and the pink "freedom" ticket. What's yours?

Pink Drawings

Big City Carnival by Lizzie Scott

Did anyone else happen to read that article in the New York Times a few weeks ago entitled Mom, You're One Tough Critic by Michael Tortorello? It was about the dilemma parents face on whether to hoard or toss their child's art projects and drawings? I sure got a kick out of it as I probably lean toward the hoarding side of things. I have piles (confession: boxes) of Lizzie's drawings and she's quite a prolific kid. For instance, these are just a sampling from what I like to call her "pink period" which was yesterday, Wednesday, February 16th, 2011. There are at least a dozen more of these pink drawings--I didn't count, I just added them to the "pile". In an ideal world I would probably scan every drawing and create a digital archive but when will I ever have the time for that? I'm guessing Lizzie will have to sort through them when she's all grown up. For now you get to enjoy the doodles of a six-year-old girl who is in love with the color pink, boats (lovin' those big oars!), islands, fairies, castles, fish and houses--at least she was yesterday.

Dear Uppercase

Dear Uppercase,

Let me count the ways I love your pages. You are eye candy for my creative soul. My to-do lists vanish when you appear and so does my cabin fever. It's hard to concentrate on anything when you are sitting there waiting to be read and re-read. I'm seriously considering scheduling 4 vacation days a year. What have you done to me? I cannot grow tired of you. You will never end up in a recycling bin because you are beautiful & timeless. I will collect and keep you forever and ever.
