The first snowflakes of the season drifted down earlier this week. Looks like we're in for a long winter. On the to-do list this weekend....shop for snow boots. Gotta keep our tootsies warm! This wintery mix of collage blocks will be posted in the shop today.

Winter Art Blocks
We had our first freeze a few nights ago here in Springfield, Missouri. Some of the neighborhood trees are already bare and the sound of leaf blowers has become the norm. Looks like winter is right around the corner! A dozen art blocks are ready be stocked in the shop today along with some ornaments.

A Marshmallow World
Patrick got this song stuck in his head last week and has been going around singing it so often now its looping 'round in my head too! Thought I'd share it with you so you can join in my fun. Oh...and having a song stuck up there without knowing all the lyrics drives me batty so in case you're like me here ya go:
A Marshmallow World
by Dean Martin
It's a marshmallow world in the winter
When the snow comes to cover the ground
It's the time for play, it's a whipped cream day
I wait for it the whole year round.
Those are marshmallow clouds being friendly
In the arms of the evergreen trees
And the sun is red like a pumpkin head
It's shining so your nose won't freeze.
The world is your snowball, see how it grows
That's how it goes whenever it snows
The world is your snowball just for a song
Get out and roll it along
It's a yum-yummy world made for sweethearts
Take a walk with your favorite girl
It's a sugar date, what if spring is late
In winter it's a marshmallow world.

Snow On Things
We woke up this morning to snow on everything! It's our first snow of the season and of the year ('bout time!). Two years ago you couldn't have made me venture outside to take pictures on a snowy morning but now that I have a blog I shocked Patrick by my announcement. Do you remember Lizzie's orange birdhouse? It's such a pop of color out our window. Happy Monday all!

Hey Diddle, Diddle
If you live in North America, don't forget to head outside tonight to witness the total lunar eclipse. What a great way to welcome the Winter solstice! We're planning to stay up late, bundle up and see what we can see. Here's a handy time table to check when it's best viewed from your time zone.

Wanted: A Long Winter's Nap
Too many 2 am nights (errr...mornings) these last few weeks have been taking their toll on me and I'm dreaming of hibernating in January once this holiday rush is said and done. Jenny Mitchell's (aka frecklewonder) post last week resonated with me and I marched over (virtually of course) to her shop and purchased the above plaque. A nervous breakdown might be a bit extreme but you get the point. Like I said a long winter's nap would do the trick!

Winter Fun

Winter Fun by Lizzie Scott, age 5
We have a busy weekend ahead. The shops are humming with activity, Patrick is studying for finals (another semester of grad school almost complete!) and Lizzie will be enjoying her last weekend as a 5 year old as she turns 6 on Monday! She has been dreaming up all kinds of winter fun as you can see in the drawing above. Have a beautiful weekend!

December Frost

It seems like winter has finally arrived in Kansas. We woke up to this beautiful frost on the car windows and the temperature at a mere 14 degrees. Hope your Monday is going well.

Melting Snow

Lizzie and I ventured outside yesterday afternoon to view the remnants of our latest snowfall. There are only a few scattered traces of it and they are quickly disappearing. The forecast over the weekend here in Manhattan, Kansas is for a high in the mid 40's. Dare we dream of spring?

A leaf waiting for decomposition.

Back inside, muddy shoes off.

These toes are ready for spring!
Our weekend plans are simple: grocery shopping, studio time and a walk. What are yours?

Cozy Afghans

Today has been damp, cold and foggy. It's the perfect kind of day for curling up under a cozy afghan with a good book--if I could only find the time! There is an amazing selection of colorful, vintage afghans available on Etsy. Thought I'd share a few of my current favorites. The above knit, patchwork-style afghan at The Vintage Cabin is $26.00.
This chevron patterned afghan at Vintage Marmalade is $38.00.
What an amazing color combination! Teenah Time, $38.00
The calm, muted tones on this one make it a personal favorite: Vintagous, $32.00.
And last but not least, another vintage beauty at Finding Fabulous, $22.00.
Stay warm!

Orange Fringe
Nothing quells the mid-January blues like orange fringed placemats! I purchased these from Yokohiyoko on New Year's day anticipating the need for a pop of color.

Winter Light

Winter light can be so persistent and some days it's difficult to photograph pieces for the shop. I really should have taken the time by now to purchase or build a light box so I'm not always dependant on the weather. Anyhow, I thought I'd share my makeshift set up with you today. A layer of tissue paper on the window does wonders for diffusing the light.
